Volume XXXXII –Number 16

Sunday was another good day! It is good to see good numbers in worship. John Durham shared with us in Bible class about his work to help with what is going on in Ukraine. I appreciate John so much for his love and willingness to minister to these people in that part of the world. We will never know just how much or how many folks have obeyed the Gospel because of the work of John and so many others who have sacrificed to go there. May we all continue to pray for what is happening to innocent lives in Ukraine.

Our annual singing at Camp Meribah was good. We had a good number gathered as we sang praises to God in the outdoor setting of God’s wondrous creation. Camp Meribah brings about many good memories for so many of this congregation as Matthew talked about during his lesson. A wonderful place that has impacted the lives of many. Next year we hope to be back singing in the rock quarry at camp.

In Luke 10:38-42, the Bible states: “Now it came to pass, as they went, that He entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard His word. But Martha was cumbered about with much serving, and came to Him, and said, Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Bid her therefore that she helps me. And Jesus answered and said to her, Martha, Martha, you are careful and troubled about many things: but one thing is needful: and Mary has chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

From these passages, we learn that Martha suffered from a problem that is still quite common today. She worried; she made the mistake of allowing anxiety to get the best of her. It controlled her to the point that she ridiculed Jesus for letting her sister sit and listen to His teaching. Perhaps if Martha had spent more time listening to Jesus as Mary did, she would not have been so worried.

Thankfully, Scripture furnishes us with some valuable instructions that will help us overcome worry if we will put them into practice. Consider the statement found in Psalm 55:22: “Cast your burden upon the Lord, and He will sustain you: He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.”

Also, in Philippians 4:6-7 we read: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Furthermore, Peter would write, “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon Him; for He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:6-7). The Bible teaches repeatedly that the alternative to worry is giving our concerns to the Lord through prayer. Instead of worrying and allowing ourselves to be overcome with anxiety, let us practice the admonition given in Hebrews 4:16: “Let us, therefore, come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

Praying you have a blessed and worry-free week! God Bless -Todd
